This one-of-a-kind native arboretum will be known as the Krippendorf Arboretum and will showcase 113 species of trees, shrubs, and woody vines native to the eastern US. This designation strengthens our mission to teach visitors about the beauty of trees and the benefits of planting native.

From 1898 to 1964, Carl and Mary Krippendorf were the owners and stewards of this beautifully forested area we now designate as the Krippendorf Arboretum.

Both Carl and Mary were avid gardeners. They loved to invite friends to visit their home to experience the land they loved, affectionately called “Lob’s Wood.” No one left the Krippendorf property empty-handed. They gave out daffodils, Lycoris, and other bulbs to visitors. Today, the beautiful beech and maple woods around the Krippendorf Lodge preserve their love for the natural world.

While the Krippendorf Arboretum celebrates the native trees, shrubs, and woody vines of the Ohio Valley region, it should be noted that some non-native species can be observed during your visit. During their residence, Carl and Mary planted some exotic trees and shrubs that captured their interest. In an effort to preserve their legacy, we've sought to showcase and celebrate these plants. Those non-native, non-invasive species are noted below.
