Resources for Teachers

In an effort to extend outdoor learning to schoolyards, Cincinnati Nature Center offers teacher trainings to show you how to use your existing outdoor spaces as an extension of your classroom.

Lauren Lutson

Parents, teachers, and other adults in the lives of students are the ones with the real power to expose children to nature on a regular basis.

We encourage these adults to actively participate in our school programs with the hope that they will take children outside for learning opportunities beyond the field trip.

Teacher Workshops

Cincinnati Nature Center often offers professional development for early childhood and elementary teachers during summer months. Customized nature-based trainings are also available at our location or yours for $90/hour for up to 12 participants. We offer trainings throughout the year, as well as shortened sessions for school in-services or conferences.

Events are offered throughout the year by Cincinnati Nature Center to provide public and private school teachers with positive social, personal, and educational experiences in nature. Some events will include teachers and their families, while others are for teachers only. Dates and times will vary based on the topic.

Nature in the Classroom

In 2021-2022, we brought teachers together from a dozen area school districts for a workshop focused on schoolyard pollination. Teachers learned more about how to integrate native plants and animals into their classroom curricula and how to use their existing outdoor spaces for learning. We also took a deeper dive into the natural history of plants and animals they're likely to find in their schoolyards.

We were grateful to receive funding from the Ohio Environmental Education Fund for this workshop series in order to pay stipends to participating teachers, provide books and materials for classrooms, as well as giving away native plants to get small gardens started in each schoolyard.
