Native Plants 101 (Online, Self-Paced)

Bring life into your outdoor space while helping the natural world! In this practical, self-paced, online course, you’ll discover the human and ecological benefits of planting native, learn about powerhouse native plants, and create a garden plan that fits your outdoor space (and personality!). From site assessment to plant choice and maintenance, this course will give you the tools you need to get started with native gardening in your backyard or community.  

Preregistration required by Friday, October 4, 9 am. Member adult $45; nonmember adult $50.

This course will be most applicable to learners within the midwest and northeastern United States. This course is best suited for adults and teens 13 years and older. A computer, tablet or phone with internet access is required to complete the course.

Course topics include:

Definition of “native plants” and other key terms

• Human and ecological benefits of planting native

• Site assessment for creating a native garden

• “Powerhouse” native plants

• Creating a plant list

• Navigating the nursery

• Starting and planting a plot

• Garden design basics

• Seasonal care and maintenance

• Inspirational case studies

This five-week, 10-hour course includes:

• Videos

• Readings

• Interactive Learning Tools

• Course Forum

• Downloadable Garden Planning Template  

All coursework is online and self-paced. Learners can expect to spend between 1.5–2 hours per week on coursework and at-home activities. This time-limited course will be available for five weeks only; October 7–November 12, 2024.
