Cincinnati Nature Center Receives Transformational Gift from Hugh Hoffman

In 2023, Cincinnati Nature Center was honored to receive an unprecedented legacy gift from Hugh Hoffman. Midway through the year, we were informed of an extraordinary bequest of approximately $28 million, the largest single donation in the Nature Center’s history. This unrestricted gift, generously left by longtime member Hugh Hoffman, marks a transformative moment for our organization.

Hugh Hoffman passed away in March 2023 at the age of 91. He was the nephew of Stanley M. Rowe, Sr., the visionary founder of Cincinnati Nature Center, who in 1967 realized his dream of creating a “wooded preserve where all would be taught to appreciate and understand the natural world.” Hoffman's remarkable gift ensures that this legacy will continue for generations to come.

The timing of this donation could not be more fitting, as the Nature Center is in the process of finalizing a Master Plan to guide our future. Executive Director Jeff Corney shared,“There are so many ways the Nature Center hopes to enhance its conservation efforts and broaden the experiences we offer the community. This transformational gift will allow us to grow into a modern destination, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds to nature.”

Hugh Hoffman's family has a long history with the Nature Center. His nephew, Bert Bullock, along with his wife and daughters, represent the third and fourth generations of their family's partnership with the Nature Center. Bert’s daughters attended CincyNature Camps and later served as camp counselors.

“I’m thrilled that Uncle Hugh has chosen to continue our family’s legacy of supporting Cincinnati Nature Center,” Bullock said. “It has been a magical place for our entire family, and we look forward to working together with the Nature Center to honor both my great Uncle Stan’s and Uncle Hugh’s legacies.”

Cincinnati Nature Center staff are deeply grateful for Hugh Hoffman’s generosity and vision. We look forward to sharing future updates on how this transformative gift will be used to enhance the Nature Center’s role in our community.
